When is it time to say enough?
There is an increasing amount of debate in relation to banning the advertising of ‘fast food’ to children. In Ireland we already have a strict code that requires warnings on certain food advertisements and restrictions on the times that some of these can be shown.
Let me say at the outset that I am in favour of a certain amount of control in relation to this. Care does need to be taken when advertising is directed at children. The question is, when does this verge into the territory of a nanny state? Where does parental responsibility enter the equation?
Yes there should be rules in relation to advertising to children but parents have to play a role in ensuring a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. A total ban is not the solution and if it does happen what is next? Who determines what is good and bad for us?
