The ghost of Charles Haughey, Lynch & DeValera had really dominated the pre game chat. A state of the nation address? A moment in history cast in televisual amber. What was in store for us over the coming days, months, years? We are of course living beyond our means but what would be our ‘living beyond our means’?

I have heard Enda deliver a couple of great speeches, with the Cloyne report being a particular highlight. This was all a bit of a damp squib. Enda looked drilled to a competent but an uncomfortable tee. No empowering phrases to grab hold off. Nothing to raise the blood, to raise the nation.Even the lighting was bare and flat.

Interesting times indeed but to paraphrase Obi Wan this was not the address we were looking for…
