A little bird told me…
Twitter is about to extend its advertising offering to allow advertisers place ads in front of people who haven’t asked to see them. And they won’t be allowed to opt out of the ads either.
Brands are currently able to place ads in front of users who are already followers. This new system will allow brands place ads in front of those who follow similar brands. Twitter have described it as “Promoted Tweets to users like your followers.” It’s the first time Twitter will display ads to users who haven’t taken some direct action to trigger them, either by following or searching.
Twitter has slowly, but steadily, increased its advertising offering; all the time keeping a careful eye on a users-base used to an ad free environment. So if all goes well with this new disruptive model, one would expect additional advertising solutions to more rapidly come on stream. Especially if they are going to live up to their $8.4 billion valuation.
